The Second Step is the Hardest!
The Second Step is the Hardest!
People say the first step is the hardest. I don’t agree.
The second step is.
Bear with me.
Years ago, if you’d asked me how things were going…
I would’ve said, “Fine.”
Business running.
Life moving.
Showing up.
But underneath?
Pressure.
Noise.
Internal conflict.
Carrying more than I let on.
And here’s the part a lot of leaders won’t admit…
You can look like you’re performing…while slowly drifting out of alignment.
Fast forward to now.
Different story.
Not because life got easier.
It didn’t.
In fact, last year I went through throat cancer.
But what changed…was what I had built before the pressure hit.
A foundation.
Not by accident.
By design.
Because here’s what I’ve learned working with leaders, teams, and organisations:
Life doesn’t wait until you’re ready.
Pressure doesn’t ask permission.
Deadlines hit.
Markets shift.
People leave.
Health gets tested.
Decisions stack up.
So the real question isn’t:
“Will pressure come?”
It’s:
“What happens to you…when it does?”
Do you:
Stay aligned
Communicate clearly
Make decisions with intent
Or do you:
React
Avoid
Drift
Default to old patterns
Here’s where a lot of leadership conversations get it wrong.
They focus on awareness.
And don’t get me wrong — awareness matters.
Step 1 is awareness.
Knowing:
Where you’re off
Where the gaps are
What’s really going on beneath the surface
But awareness doesn’t change performance.
The second step does.
And that’s where most people stall.
Because step two requires:
Action
Ownership
Conversations you’ve been avoiding
Decisions you’ve been delaying
It’s walking into the room.
Having the conversation.
Changing the pattern — not just talking about it.
Knowing isn’t the problem.
Doing it under pressure is.
That’s why most organisations don’t have a leadership problem.
They have a consistency problem under pressure.
At ELEVATum, this is the work:
IEQ → Awareness, alignment, integrity
RQ → Regulation and response under pressure
CQ → Consistency that shapes culture
Because culture isn’t built on what you know.
It’s built on how you behave…repeatedly…when it matters most.
I’m not going to tell you this is easy.
I’ll tell you what it is.
Necessary.
So here’s the question:
If pressure hit your business tomorrow…
What would it reveal?
If you’re ready to stop talking about leadership and start strengthening it where it actually breaks…
Let’s have a conversation.
Pressure reveals everything.
Response changes everything.
